I’ve loved Grace and Frankie (Netflix) since it started. Lily Tomlin has inspired me for as long as I can remember. She won a SAG Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
In her acceptance speech, she said, “Behind every failure is an opportunity someone wishes they had missed.”
This short film has nothing to do with Grace or Frankie. Or Lily Tomlin, for that matter. But, I envisioned Jane Fonda and her character Grace as I created Ethel sitting at the pond trying to teach herself how to fish because it should be a simple task, after all. Herman is most definitely not Frankie, but I hope he adores Ethel as much as Frankie adores Grace. Whereas Grace and Frankie tolerated one another for many years, they’ve learned to depend on one another, Herman and Ethel have been married for almost as long as they can remember, because what is the point of remembering life before Ethel.
