THE 2020 ANNUAL – The Elizabeth River Writers
Charles Cooper, III and Stella Samuel join forces to bring writing treasures to the world in the Elizabeth River Press Annual. A place where writers belong, feel welcome, and can build their foundation, no matter where their writing career takes them, this year’s Annual celebrates writers from all over the world. The Elizabeth River Writers is a well-versed tribe of prose writers and poets.
When Stella Samuel heard complaints of new writers submitting and hearing no constantly, she discovered not a lack of skill in writing, but a lack of publishers who would take on the influx of writing. After years of publishing experience, she asked Charles Cooper from Elizabeth River Press to partner with her and help build a tribe of writers to uplift and support each other as they travel their personal and professional journeys into the world of publishing. We hope you enjoy these pieces from thirty-four authors, this year’s Elizabeth River Writers, in the 2020 Annual, a compilation of life through words.
The 2021 Annual is available!
This year, Stella Samuel’s ARZONO Publishing brought together 46 authors and poets from around the globe for heart-wrenching, heartwarming, and heart-tugging stories and poems.
This is the first Annual Stella has published alone from start to finish. Doing so was crucial for Stella to empower herself with the confidence she wants to imprint on the writers she supports in this writing and publishing journey. This Annual, following a year of global pandemic, lockdowns, and immeasurable loss, is perfect for feeling all the things we felt as a world in 2020 and heading into 2021. From love and loss to renewal and hope, Stella believes these writers have captured exactly where we are, united in love, in this time capsule book.
The year 2022 hit fast and fell faster. For me, it will always be the year I almost died over and again. It will be the year I was challenged and loved more than I ever thought possible. It was the year I got married. And fought for my life, wondering if we’d ever be able to celebrate our love together. With some kind of power, I managed to publish the annual and am proud of the writers who stood with me, trusted me, and stayed while I was ill for many months.
The 2023 Annual proved to be more challenging that the year before. My journey with Valley Fever didn’t end with the calendar roll over. It’s tried to wipe me out twice this year. Though I put angst and emotion into my pieces in the annual and edited the writers who were so gracious and trusted me with their work, I also had to empower grace upon myself and give it a break. I am proud of these annuals, and I hope to continue to uplift writers and keep publishing work so we each have access to more stories to read.
Developmental Editing
Elizabeth River Press editing… I am super excited at a 6-book (so far) series Charles Cooper has been writing for a while now. I’ve had an opportunity to read the story, get to know the characters and plot, and edit and develop this project. I can’t say what it is just yet… but fans of political thrillers, military fiction, and even science geeks who really know just what humans are capable of doing to one another will love this series. And we have big plans for it! So look for updates in 2024!
